Barceló Fortina Malta

This hotel was so nice, really high standards of cleanliness and comfort. We were super lucky and got upgraded to a room with a hot tub on the balcony which was a great surprise, neither of us have ever been upgraded to anything before! So that was a big plus for us. The hotel's location is great, it's proximity to the Sliema ferry terminal was brilliant too. In general the hotel is brilliant and I would definitely stay there again, was sad to have to leave! One big perk is that as a guest you have access to a fully equipped public gym which we enjoyed (but just note this can get really busy at peak times). Overall our experience with the hotel was amazing. My only feedback is in relation to the arrangement with the swimming pool. Online it seems as if by staying with the hotel you get to lounge poolside. However upon arrival we learned that the pool is actually part of a beach club across the road and you need to book in to use the pool area a day in advance. Then upon arrival to the pool we found that hotel guests are only allocated a lounge area consisting of three rows of loungers (not allowed on the front row looking at the sea) around the corner from the pool and weren't allowed lie by the pool itself. This wasn't as nice as expected, based on the hotel images online we felt a bit misled. While the club is really nice and the service is great, we were a bit disappointed to not be right by the pool, looking over at Valetta and it kind of felt like hotel guests were shoved away to the side. This is a minor piece of feedback as the pool is still amazing and we highly rate the hotel. Just maybe something to be aware of.

We stayed at the Barcelo fortina Malta for a weeks holiday ... its in a great location in Sliema, close to shops and the various boat trips / bus station and ferry terminal to Valletta. The hotel is modern , with all the staff being very attentive... on booking we advised that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and ordered a bottle of sparkling Prosecco for the room , unfortunately i had to remind the reception of the pre order as it wasn't in the room on arrival - but it was quickly resolved. I suspect that the guest experience team may not have logged the request on to the booking for the front of house... We stayed on the 7th floor in deluxe sea view room. the room was very spacious with a great amenities, walk in shower and a full size bath. one of the best hotel rooms i have ever stayed in. The room was exceptionally clean and tidy with lots of storage space for clothes etc. The room servicing and bed turn down service was very good, nothing too much trouble - apart from only being allowed one bottle of water per day - which does seem a bit crazy when you can have free sparkling wine with your breakfast. The food was excellent - with a different themed dinner menu each day - and a live cooking of one or more dishes each day - including breakfast (omelettes / poached eggs). The spa was very clean and tidy with a lovely indoor pool - we didnt use the bookable guest access to the attached Lido, preferring a quieter swim / sauna etc. There was some out side road noise, but nothing intrusive and it certainly didn't distract from the fabulous room and balcony view. We booked through Jet2, who were again superb in their communications re any transfers / booking etc. - and as such we found the whole holiday to be very good value for money - we will definitely be booking to return with no hesitation.

Return visit to the Fortina there’s a lot to like about this hotel not lease view of Valletta. If you can afford a true sea view room on an upper floor then you are in for a good stay. Unlike some “chain” hotels there is some variation to each room layout and the position around the tower will dictate which view you have, also how much sun you get and when. The food offering is a buffet for both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is very good with lots of quality options. The evening buffet isn’t so good and can run low of popular items later in the service. Restaurant staff are very keen to clear away which can lead to premature clearance of your table? The hotel has access to a pool, spa and gym. Pool beds have to booked via reception a day in advance and space can be at a premium during busy weekends and hot summer days. Some of the staff have now been in post from the reopening and are starting to shine, some of the newer hands need to up their game. Don’t expect to see much of senior hotel managers apart from the nights when the restaurant manager is on shift?
