Hotel Calypso

This hotel is in the most beautiful of locations. The staff are amazing. We would definitely return. Here are our honest thoughts. You walk out onto the beach, to the cleanest waters, perfect for people who love to stroll around and switch off, it was too cold for me to go in the water so we will be back!! Overall 10/10 Cleanliness - the staff are amazing. Our room was spotless. There wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere. Absolutely no complaints. Overall 10/10 Breakfast - a huge shout out to the lady who over sees the day to day running. She doesn’t stop and nothing is too much trouble, the food was fresh, good selection. Lows - the juice machine was temperamental, the coffee was awful. Some of the crockery was chipped. The day the lady was away it was a bit chaotic. She really is the glue that keeps it all together! Overall 9/10 Rooms - we stayed in a room overlooking the back, it was quiet, the balcony was small but perfectly fit for a couple. The rooms are a good size, nice size bathroom, fresh towels daily. The beds are harder than the UK but not as bad as Thailand!! We don’t mind but some people may find them uncomfortable. There was no clothes rail to pop damp items so we had to drape over the chairs. Overall 10/10 The pool wasn’t available but up on the 6th floor the views are incredible and the pool looked ample. We will have to return to try it out. We didn’t have lunch or an evening meal at the hotel however there are plenty of choices a stones throw away. The hotel had a good menu and the option for room service, Hickory joes across the way must be tried!! If you want an amazing pizza you must try the little coffee shop in Victoria where the police officers eat! Absolutely stunning!!! There’s also a little coffee shop in Victoria in an alley that does the best canoli , lemon meringue and traditional ice cream… Buses - the best public transport we have ever seen. All the drivers are so helpful and it’s just so easy a process..The UK could learn a lot!!! We used the fast ferry once, excellent service to have!

Christmas day lunch was horrible. Inexperienced staff. The buffet was so limited. Kids section was cold. No carvery dishes so the food was cold. And the dessert, a nightmare. Some dried cheap panettone. Not even any water glasses on the table. Then when people complained for there was not even enough panettone they brought some frozen cheap cakes one buys in supermarkets.

We went to Hotel Calypso for Christmas Day lunch in 2025, and it was an insult. The buffet had no heated carvery dishes, and all the food was served cold. There was no proper dessert, only a dry panettone. When people complained, a few frozen, horrible cakes were brought out, which looked and tasted as if they had been kept in the freezer for days. There was also a lack of proper cutlery and glasses on the tables. The taste and quality of the food were terrible, and we later suffered stomach problems. Overall, it was a very disappointing and unacceptable experience

We stayed for 1 night during our walk around Gozo on the coastal path. All other hotels we have stayed at before this one were excellent - this was disappointing. The building is aged and dirty. Our inland room was average, but fixtures and fitting were old, stained, and the curtains ripped and held together with a safety pin. The balcony was tiny, filthy and had two old dirty chairs on it. Our ‘inland’ view was of waste ground, bags are of rubbish and a old caravan. The resort itself is filthy - rubbish lining the streets and overflowing bins. On a positive the breakfast was nice. Reception staff told us all inland rooms overlook wasteland and rubbish, as do several bay and sea view rooms. We would not recommend or visit again.

This hotel is a bit of a mash up of modern and old. Basically clean and staff helpful. Decent sized rooms but a tiny bathroom with shower over the bath. Breakfast was dreadful as supposedly hot food was basically tepid. OK if you just want cold food, but limited fruit and no muesli. Fruit juice was weak and we had to ask for teaspoons to eat a small tub of yogurt. Toast was either underdone or burned, depending how often you put it through the machine. Goodness only knows what Room Service food or Evening Meals in the 'restaurant' was like. The bed was two singles pushed together. Therefore the quilt wasn't big enough and was on sideways with the opening down one side and the quilt stuck out as the cover wasn't big enough. We also found holes in the quilt cover. Didn't use the ceiling fan over the bed as the blades were rusty. The bathroom grouting was black in places, although the tiles looked clean. I had to ask for a non slip mat to go in the base of the bath. They did provide one, but without any grab rails, having a shower was a risky business. Towels very basic too. The overall finish of everything in the holed was OK until you looked closely. Great view from the balcony, but chairs and table faded and flaking. Pool area needed lots of TLC. OK as a base to look around the island.
