Pestana Quinta Do Arco Nature & Rose Garden

The hotel is located in a stunningly beautiful and rural location facing mountains and the coast and each apartment sits on its own in lovely garden surroundings. It was next to the famous rose garden which unfortunately was closed. The apartment was spacious and adequate for our needs and even had a small hob and fridge and kettle which was very useful. The apartment was clean and cleaned every day. The location was wonderfully quiet and peaceful and we could hear frogs croaking at night. The breakfast building ( Roseira Tea House) was a short 5 minute walk away and we ended up eating most of our evening meals there too as without a car it was not really possible to get to anywhere else to eat in evenings. Although we managed to get around on buses, they take ages and are not very frequent, you really need a car to make the most of being in this hotel. We did a lot of walking but because roads are so steep be sure to bring walking boots and walking sticks if you’re walking. The service was fine - staff can organise car hire if needed. It would have been good if there had been organised excursions from the hotel. The breakfasts and evening meals were great and not too expensive. We unfortunately very bad weather in March and it rained every day but this we were told was very unusual for this time of the year.

My stay in this place was perfect. I spent 7 nights here and from the very first day I felt truly well taken care of. The staff were extremely kind, helpful and understanding. At the beginning I asked to change my bungalow because I wanted a more secluded location – I meditate in the mornings and needed quiet. They agreed without any problem and fully respected my needs. In the end I received a bungalow at the very end of the property, exactly as I wished. Each bungalow is surrounded by a beautiful garden full of flowers. In the mornings I was woken only by the sound of the ocean and birds singing – no other noise at all. My bungalow was spacious, comfortable and met all my needs. I stayed in January, so the nights were quite cool, but the fireplace made the evenings very pleasant. Every day fresh firewood was delivered. Breakfasts were generous and the staff always made sure that everything was available. The room was cleaned daily. This is a perfect place for people who appreciate nature, peace, kindness and hospitality. The WiFi was excellent and allowed me to work remotely without any problems. The ocean is about 3 minutes by car, and the famous levadas are around 20 minutes away. I truly recommend this place – it was a wonderful and unforgettable stay.

Stayed for one night and wished we could have stayed longer! The hotel grounds are absolutely stunning, with beautifully maintained gardens that make every walk to the room truly breathtaking. The rooms are stylish, exceptionally clean, and very comfortable. The individual houses feel new and are tastefully decorated, with everything functioning perfectly. The beds were especially comfortable, ensuring a wonderful night’s sleep. Breakfast was excellent and a true highlight of the stay. The walk to the restaurant is yet another chance to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, with breathtaking mountain views, the soothing sound of running water, and lush greenery filled with flowers. The staff throughout the property were warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful, adding to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Overall, it was a wonderful experience in a serene and beautiful setting, and I would happily return.

Very hard to recommend. The gardens are very nice and I'm sure they would look fairly spectacular in summer. The area around Arco de Soa Jorge is very nice as well. The rooms however were not great - the first villa we were offered was cold, damp and musty with signs of mould on the fold down bed. We moved to one of the newer studios which was OK. Dinners were available in the nearby restaurant attached to the hotel (5 minute walk), but we're not great. We had a room on a B&B basis for 3 nights. On each morning, most of the "hot" food was cold - cold scrambled egg and cold fried eggs being particularly unappealling. Overall this place did not have the feel, quality or value we associate with the Pestana hotel we stayed in near the Lido in Funchal. OK for a visit to the north which was very nice, but definitely a disappointing stay. My wife says she'd stay again....I'm not sure I would though.
