As a single mother to a child I put a lot of money and hope in the Hyatt brand for this week long vacation. We were very let down. Upon arriving I could tell the place was not very well maintained (dirty floors where floor meets walls). While walking to our room my seven year old commented on how dirty the hallways were (which was accurate; littered with dead bugs and windows that hadn’t seen cleaning or paint in forever). Getting in to our room (in the main part of resort) was my first sign we made a bad choice. If you are from the US it resembled a Motel 6/Super 8. Our door was left ajar and required a hard shove in order to close it from the inside. Upon leaving the room it was clear the door had been broken in to evidenced by split wood in the door itself as well as the frame. The door would then not open from the exterior. The shower was absolutely deplorable with visible filth and mold. The toilet wasn’t fully cleaned. I paid for a deluxe double bed. The second bed was a chair that pulled out to a twin-ish sized bed. Walking to the pool each one we passed did not seem clean and the kid friendly swim areas were so poorly maintained - visible rust that could easily hurt a kid. I immediately got in touch with my travel agent and was told a room change couldn’t be made for 24 hours. In my complaints about safety with the front desk they were less than apologetic let alone polite. The young kid was actually giving me attitude arguing with me telling me I didn’t know how to operate a door. Later discovered he gave me the wrong key. Day 2 a room change was made and it was a laughable “upgrade.” Equally as unclean and poorly maintained. The kicker was it being a ground floor room with no working locking mechanism(s) on the sliding door. Between my agent and I working with concierge I basically told them unless I was put in a near top of the line suite I was not going to be satisfied. We were eventually put into a nice room in the Sunclub which was the saving grace. The Sunclub was the only thing that kept me from getting on the next flight home. It is far cleaner on that side of the property, maintained better (not great; pool filtration was poor there was always junk floating around, tiles missing in the pool, loose tiles surrounding the pools). The food is very geared toward anything but American. The texture of all the meats was inexplainable, there was no dressing for salads, overall the food was highly disappointing. Nothing was appropriately hot or cold aside from maybe the icecream. We went to Chopsticks where I saw a roach the size of a Matchbox car scurry past us. The seaweed, while controlled by a barrier, makes the water brackish and similar to lake water. I understand it is seasonally affected but it’s a turn off. Honestly, the website completely misrepresents what this place looks like. It is hands down not anywhere close to even middle of the road. It was insanely disappointing and I will pursue having my experience heard by someone at Hyatt and my travel agent has also notified their package providers of this negative experience.

I chose Sunscape Coco Punta Cana because of the Hyatt name and the expectations that come with the brand. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing resort experiences I have ever had. During our 4-day stay, we had constant issues with the air conditioning. We had to change rooms multiple times, and even after moving rooms, the problems continued. Out of the three rooms we stayed in, we found cockroaches in two of them. One room had a dirty bathtub upon arrival, visible mold on the bathroom door, and a strong musty smell that made the room feel damp and poorly maintained. The customer service experience was also very disappointing. The front desk was slow, communication was poor, and there was very little follow-up after reporting issues. We repeatedly had to return to the front desk to ask for updates. The way our concerns were handled did not reflect the level of service I would expect from Hyatt. The resort also had many shortages that affected the overall experience. Several bars repeatedly ran out of fresh mint for mojitos, and when requesting other drinks, we were often told that the required liquor was unavailable. Basic items at breakfast were also frequently unavailable, with guests simply being told, “it’s gone.” Many restaurants had inadequate air conditioning, making dining uncomfortable. Another major disappointment was the lack of a dedicated area for dancing merengue and bachata. For a resort in Punta Cana, where Dominican music and culture are such an important part of the experience, it was surprising not to have a proper space for guests to enjoy local music and dancing.
