We were there for 2 weeks in June. The hotel is set in a very quiet area so if you like to go out be aware there is only a small shop attached to the hotel, a small supermarket over the road and a taverna, the other 3 tavernas and 1 bar are down the road on the beach road. That said, what was there was more than adequate to get almost anything you want. The atmosphere was very relaxed in the hotel and its perfect if you just want some time to chill out and decompress. The room we had was typically basic but well decorated, furnished, and very clean, we were in block 11 on the ground floor with a lovely sea view and it was very quiet so we slept very well the whole holiday the pool area is fantastic, with excellent comfortable sunbeds and a chill vibe, the airport runway can be seen from the pool area but despite planes coming in and out it didn't really disturb us at all, we actually enjoyed watching them land & take off. The staff at the hotel we lovely, the bar staff were lovely & friendly particularly Sylvia. On arrival we did have a small issue with room allocation, we requested rooms next to each other as 1 of our party is disabled, we were in separate blocks and as they we full they said they couldn't swap us, despite people leaving just about every day we were there. Also we booked, bed/breakfast & evening meal, arrived late on Saturday night as scheduled so our first meal was breakfast the next day, on the day of departure we had a late flight and fully expected to get our 14th evening meal as we had booked and paid for a 14 night holiday, however because we had checked out at 11am they said we don't get a meal that night, we could however pay for one which we felt was a bit of a rip off! They told us we could have requested toast on arrival which we didn't know but I personally wouldn't class that as an evening meal even if we had it. The food was ok, but a bit repetitive Plus's for us at this hotel are its proximity to the airport, free aircon in bedrooms and a free safe deposit box. Friendly staff and the cleanliness of the rooms and all public areas of the hotel in general Minus's for us at this hotel were no aircon in public areas/Lounge/bar etc, half board menu was a bit repetitive, quite isolated and a bit of a walk to the beach & restaurants. All in all we had a very nice holiday, I wouldn't choose to go back to this hotel (would prefer somewhere with more things around it) but I would recommend it if your looking for a relaxed holiday in a clean, family run and well maintained hotel.

After accommodating our request for a top floor room, we were pleased to see how nice the room was. Spotlessly clean and spacious with plenty of wardrobe space. Great shower and a/c. We had a small ant issue that was rectified satisfactorily. The only thing I forgot to mention was a weird dusty smell coming from the drawers (I just didn't bother using them). Great that there was no charge for the safe! We were told on arrival that bedding and towels are changed every 3 days - ample as far as we are concerned. €5/person/night tourist tax (cash payment only). Pool towels - you are given 3 tickets, entitling you to 6 towels (this was for a 10 night stay). Again, ample for us. I would suggest there should perhaps be some help with luggage as there's quite a slope and steps to contend with, more elderly people may struggle. The food - we had no complaints at all. Remember, this is a small hotel, so you are not going to get a massive selection, but we never went hungry. Breakfast had the usual cold meats/cheese, sausages, bacon etc. delicious Dowe Egbert coffee from a machine. Not keen on the 'fresh' juice machine though. You can't beat freshly squeezed fruit juice. Evening - lovely fresh salads and hot offerings (which were surprisingly hot unlike many other hotels we have stayed). I'm not a sweet tooth, but couldn't resist the homemade cakes and desserts! No coffee in the restaurant at dinner. Drinks reasonably priced if you are not all inclusive. We costed it and unless we had been drinking like fish and non-stop eating, it's not worth the extra €120 per day for 2). Staff - all absolutely friendly, efficient and speak excellent English. I won't name individuals, as they are all a great team. It was so nice also seeing the owner and his wife around the hotel most days and eating in the restaurant on an evening once guests had finished. Their daughter and son also work in the restaurant and are so accommodating. All in all, this was in my top 5 holidays. We will definitely return to Kefalonia, perhaps even back to Astra, although we do prefer adult only. Oh, and the only complaint was the heat! So perhaps May or September next time!! Oh, the other bonus is the fingerprint system has been switched off, so we sailed through on each leg of the journey. Made such a difference. We don't tend to explore - it was far too hot. However there are a handful of tavernas in walking distance. We also normally use the beach, but didn't on this occasion - it was rather small and cramped. The hotel pool is a perfect area to relax and stay cool. The Greeks seem to love the English (unlike the Spanish, not so much). Thank you to everyone at the Astra. We had a fabulous holiday x

We’ve visited Astra Hotel four times because we’ve always loved it, but unfortunately this visit was very disappointing. We purposely booked outside the school holidays hoping for a peaceful stay, yet the hotel was full of loud teenagers. It felt more like a youth club than the relaxing hotel we remembered. It’s a shame because we’ve always enjoyed coming here, but the atmosphere this time wasn’t what we’d expect or hope for from a repeat visit. Hopefully the hotel can do more to balance the needs of guests looking for a quieter holiday.
