Bessie's Village

We enjoyed our stay at Bessies. We had an upgraded room, it was still basic but clean! We had a change of towels and bedding after the 3rd day of our weeks stay, and this was adequate. The rooms are poorly equipped but I dont go on holiday to cook much, so it suited us as we just made sandwiches or salads! Its not the kind of holiday we usually have, the area is quite isolated with only about 4 restaurants close by. There is a supermarket just up the road. We had some lovely meals out, followed by a nightcap in the Serenity hotel bar next door. Although there is a bar at Bessies, I saw very few people use it in an evening. Overall we enjoyed our stay, would we go back, probably not as we prefer a more accessible resort. This is definitely not the resort to stay at if you have mobility problems or are travelling with children

We have just returned from 2 weeks at Bessie's Village, Kefalonia and had a truly lovely time. The whole complex was really good and such value for money. Our room was large having a terrace and a balcony so we had the sun all day. There was a king-size bed plus a spare single. The room was clean with daily bin emptying and general tidying plus towels and bedding were changed regularly. The cleaning lady was really good, nothing was too much trouble for her♥️. We are more beach people than swimming pool but I must say the swimming pool and area/beach bar were very good and really clean. There is a supermarket close by which sells everything you might need plus about 4-5 restaurants and we enjoyed the meals we had. We hired a car for 1 week to see more of Kefalonia which is a stunning island. All in all, if we were to visit Kefalonia again we would definitely stay at Bessie's Village. We had a lovely peaceful week at Bessie’s. The staff were friendly and welcoming and our room was clean, cool and comfortable with a lovely view of the sunset and a huge terrace we could have food and drinks on as the sun went down If you are looking for a lively resort with lots going on, Bessie’s & Svoronata is not for you - people complaining don’t seem to have done their research! It is a Greek self catering 2* and we had everything we needed to have a simple and comfortable stay. There is a lovely little shop round the corner, Katerina’s, which sells most things you could want - there are bigger supermarkets out of town if you have a car. The changing of sheets and towels happened once in our weeks stay - that was more than enough and the bins and loo roll were replaced daily. The pool area is beautiful with plenty of beds to choose from and the pool bar has a simple but tasty menu and a good drinks selection. There are about 5 tavernas in easy walking distance with a couple more a bit further away. Car hire is available nearby too. Unfortunately part of the beach is no more due to winter storms. We enjoyed a walk around the airport perimeter and a trip to Argostoli (recommended) via the bus which stops at the beach (bus times are on display outside reception) and we found this to be very reliable. There is a bar right next to the airport with a pool and fabulous food and drink if you want somewhere to wait for your flight home We had a lovely week at Bessie’s and would definitely return - also the building work was background noise at best - didn’t bother us at all. And the planes are fascinating to watch - a couple an hour at most Thank you guys for a wonderfully relaxing week

The mixed reviews obviously depend on whether guests were allocated a duplex room, refurbished room, or one of those in C block or above reception, which are in dire need of refurbishment. Unfortunately we were in C block! During our stay we saw no end of people who were initially given rooms in reception block packing up their bags to move rooms. We also spoke to a couple who were so disgusted they paid to move hotel the following day. People we met who were in the better rooms had a much more positive experience, with comfortable mattresses, good showers and dare I say it more thorough cleaning. They were also probably further away from the dust and noise from the building work going on at an adjacent hotel, which went on for almost twelve hours a day, apart from a short respite mid afternoon. Towels and bedding are supposed to be changed every three days but this didn't happen for us. I slept in a king size bed with a single size sheet. The beds aren't made up when you arrive, apart from the bottom sheet. The towels smelled fusty as though they hadn't been washed thoroughly, however, everything is washed on site and dried on outside washing lines adjacent to Block C and when it rained the washing was left on the lines - this could have contributed to the smell. The water temperature in the shower could not be stabilised. It was either freezing cold or scalding hot. Some days we had no water at all in the bathroom sink, even if it was available in the shower and kitchen sink. The kitchen and toilet bins were emptied daily. This was the only "cleaning" that took place, although the cleaning staff did seem to spend a lot of time cleaning duplex and refurbished rooms! There were dead insects on our bathroom floor and balcony from the day we arrived until the day we left. Our French door glass was so dirty we thought the double glazed unit had blown, until we cleaned it ourselves. The stench of raw sewage at the back of Block C was overpowering at times. The pool toilets really do need to be refurbished. One of the toilets didn't have a seat and the other had the same stains in the toilet bowl from day one to us leaving. We told the owner there was no soap or hand towels and just got a shrug, but on our third day she had been to Lidl to purchase a bottle of hand wash, but instead of hand towels we had to make do with half used rolls of toilet paper. In the end it was easier to go up to the room to use our own toilet and soap. The only positive for us was the pool, which itself is a nice area (despite the ants) and the owner's daughter who served at the pool bar was lovely and always had a smile for customers. I note Andy A's comments about English people moaning - well he obviously had a better room and experience than us. I've been going to Greek Islands for forty years (2* to 5*) and can honestly say this was the worst experience I have ever had. I actually felt sorry for the owner Georgia as she bore the brunt of the complaints, but even though it was the beginning of the season every room should have been fresh and ready for guests' arrival. We all pay for what we hope is a lovely relaxing holiday, but sadly a lot of us were short changed.

Georgia and the whole team are fantastic. Really helpful, very polite and nothing is too much trouble. Having stayed in the area for many years, this is the first time at Bessie’s but most certainly won’t be the last. We are in a duplex and it is very well equipped with lovely sea views. Rooms are cleaned often and the facilities are more than adequate . The pool area is spotless and the pool bar is well stocked with something for everyone. Thank you Georgia and team for making our stay a very pleasant one, we look forward to returning.
