I genuinely struggle to understand how Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti justifies calling itself a five-star luxury wellness resort. Beautiful architecture and spectacular mountain views mean absolutely nothing when the hospitality, food, room maintenance and management fail so spectacularly. We booked a six-night stay from 26 September to 2 October to celebrate one of the most important milestones of our lives. This was supposed to be an extraordinarily special trip for my partner and me. Instead, Lefay managed to turn what should have been a beautiful occasion into an exhausting, stressful and thoroughly disappointing experience. Let me explain exactly why. 1. THE FOOD: WORSE THAN WHAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED AT ROADSIDE RESTAURANTS Our problems began practically from the moment we arrived. We ordered in-room dining approximately three or four times, and on virtually every occasion, something was wrong with the order. The solution? We were repeatedly informed that the incorrect items would be complimentary. Excuse me, but we did not come to a supposedly luxurious Italian resort looking for free food. We came expecting competent service and food worth eating. Offering complimentary items after repeatedly getting orders wrong is not exceptional hospitality. It is an attempt to compensate for basic service failures without addressing the underlying problem. The restaurant menus were also extremely limited for our preferences, and the taste and quality of much of what we tried were shockingly disappointing. We eventually found ourselves repeatedly ordering the same limited selection of food simply because there was so little else we actually enjoyed eating. Imagine paying to stay at a luxury resort in Italy and spending several days worrying about what you are going to eat next. Every meal became a frustrating experience. This placed considerable stress on us during a holiday when we should have been enjoying ourselves. We understand that everyone has different tastes and preferences. However, the combination of limited suitable options, disappointing food and repeated room-service mistakes made dining at Lefay a thoroughly unpleasant experience for us. 2. THE AIR-CONDITIONING: DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK? This was arguably the most unacceptable aspect of our entire stay. On our very first night, the air-conditioning repeatedly switched on and off, making disturbing noises throughout the night and disrupting our sleep. The following day, it appeared to function normally. Then, during the next night, the bedroom air-conditioning stopped working altogether. At approximately 3 AM, we found ourselves dealing with an uncomfortable bedroom instead of sleeping. We did not call maintenance at three in the morning because we were exhausted and did not want technicians entering our bedroom in the middle of the night. Apparently, expecting uninterrupted sleep in a luxury resort is an unreasonable luxury. Then came the worst night. We returned to our room after one of the most important and memorable occasions of our lives, hoping to relax and enjoy the remainder of our special evening. Instead, the bedroom air-conditioning once again failed to function properly. We spent virtually the entire night uncomfortable and unable to sleep properly. I subsequently fell physically ill. Imagine visiting a luxury wellness resort to relax and celebrate, only to leave exhausted, sleep-deprived and unwell. The irony would be amusing if the experience had not been so miserable. 3. INSECTS IN THE ROOM As though the food and air-conditioning problems were insufficient, we also encountered insects inside our room. We had to contact the hotel and ask the staff to remove them. I appreciate that we were staying in the mountains and that insects can occasionally enter a property. However, when combined with everything else we experienced, this was yet another problem we had to deal with instead of enjoying our holiday. 4. THE MANAGEMENT: COMMERCIAL POLICIES BEFORE GENUINE HOSPITALITY This is where our experience went from disappointing to completely unacceptable. By 27 September, just one day after checking in, we had already decided that we were not enjoying our stay and requested to shorten our reservation, departing on 30 September rather than 2 October. We explained that the dining experience was simply not working for us. We did not expect the hotel to redesign its menus or completely change its culinary offering to accommodate our preferences. We simply wanted to leave. Despite providing several days’ notice, the hotel’s initial response focused on cancellation penalties. After negotiations through our travel adviser, Lefay offered to charge us a penalty for one unused night and issue a voucher for the other, valid until the end of December. A voucher? To return to a hotel we were specifically requesting to leave because we were unhappy with the experience? That response demonstrated, in my opinion, a complete failure to understand the situation. Following my formal complaint regarding the food, repeated room-service mistakes, malfunctioning air-conditioning, disturbed sleep and other problems, management offered us an upgrade to its Royal Pool & SPA Suite or a transfer to its Lake Garda property. Once again, completely missing the point. Our problem was not that we wanted a more expensive room. Our problem was the quality of hospitality we were receiving. Moving us to another suite does not suddenly improve food quality or service competence. Transferring us to another property belonging to the same hotel brand was hardly reassuring after our experience. I found these proposed solutions particularly frustrating because they suggested that management had not understood the seriousness of our complaints. We were not looking for complimentary food, free upgrades or special privileges. We wanted the basic services we had paid for to be delivered properly. 5. A SPECIAL OCCASION COMPLETELY OVERSHADOWED Perhaps the most upsetting aspect of this entire experience is why we travelled here in the first place. My partner and I were celebrating a major milestone in our relationship. We had spent considerable time, effort and money planning this holiday and wanted it to be one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. Instead, we spent an extraordinary amount of our time dealing with dining problems, uncomfortable nights, complaints, negotiations with management and discussions with our travel agency about leaving the property. My partner was deeply upset, and I eventually fell ill following the nights of disrupted sleep. We cannot get that time back. No complimentary upgrade or generic apology can compensate for the fact that a significant part of an occasion we had been looking forward to for so long was overshadowed by these problems. 6. WOULD WE RETURN? ABSOLUTELY NOT. We ultimately decided to leave early, even though it meant potentially losing money on the unused accommodation. That should tell prospective guests everything they need to know about how unhappy we were. We also declined the offer of a transfer to Lefay Lake Garda. My parents had been planning to visit that property the following month, and following our experience, I advised them to reconsider. I have also instructed our travel agency not to recommend or book Lefay properties for us in the future. I have communicated to management that I intend to seek independent legal advice regarding our contractual rights and the service failures we experienced. FINAL VERDICT Lefay Dolomiti may have beautiful architecture, impressive photographs and spectacular surroundings, but none of those things compensated for our experience. For us, the food was disappointing, the room service was repeatedly incompetent, the bedroom air-conditioning was unreliable, our sleep was severely disrupted, and management’s proposed solutions failed to address our underlying concerns. I have stayed at numerous luxury hotels and resorts, and this was by far our most disappointing luxury spa-resort experience. The most frustrating part is that we were not making extravagant demands. We simply expected good food, correctly delivered orders, a functioning bedroom, comfortable sleep and competent hospitality. Those should be the starting point for any hotel, particularly one positioning itself in the luxury segment. If you are considering Lefay Dolomiti for an anniversary, honeymoon, proposal or another important occasion, I strongly encourage you to research the property carefully and consider other options. We entrusted Lefay with an extraordinarily special part of our lives. Unfortunately, our experience left us regretting that decision. Never again.

A perfect stay at an amazing resort. Facilities, staff and food were all as good as it gets in a beautiful setting. Can’t recommend highly enough.
