We stayed at Hotel Mi Rochor during our visit to Singapore. There are definitely some positives, particularly the location, but unfortunately our overall experience didn’t live up to the hotel’s very good reviews. The biggest positive is the location. Rochor MRT station is only a few minutes’ walk away, making it very easy to get around Singapore. The hotel also has a covered car pick-up and drop-off area, which is surprisingly useful when you’re waiting for a Grab during a Singapore downpour. The pool area itself is pleasant, although getting a chair or lounger is another matter. No matter what time we went past, it seemed to be busy. We decided not to book breakfast after reading previous reviews. Having walked past the breakfast area each morning and seen what was on offer, I think we made the right decision. Unfortunately, there were quite a few negatives. Firstly, the shower. The water pressure was incredibly weak and would fluctuate between weak and almost non-existent. The temperature also constantly changed. A decent shower is a fairly basic expectation in a hotel, and this was one of the worst I’ve experienced. Housekeeping also seemed badly organised. We were generally leaving our rooms between 9am and 10am, with the “please make up room” light switched on, and returning at around 7pm. On many occasions the rooms still hadn’t been cleaned. They were eventually being made up at around 8pm. When a room has been empty virtually all day, I don’t think guests should be having housekeeping arrive that late in the evening. There were also no hand towels supplied, which seems like another strange cost-cutting decision. Then there were the beds. I’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels and I can confidently say these were the hardest beds I have ever slept on. They weren’t just firm — they were SUPER hard. I genuinely think the floor might have been softer. The rooms are tiny. To be fair, I knew they were small before booking and the photos make this clear, but they somehow felt even smaller in person. There was virtually nowhere to unpack clothes, so we ended up living out of our suitcases. Fortunately, the beds are high enough to slide cases underneath, otherwise there would have been almost nowhere to put them. We also had repeated problems with one of our room keycards. It stopped working three separate times during the stay. Once is understandable, but three times became frustrating, particularly when your room is on the 14th floor and you have to keep going back down to reception for another card. The cleanliness of the bedding was another concern. Twice we found large grubby marks on the bedsheets. These weren’t tiny stains that could easily have been overlooked — they were big, obvious marks. I’m really not sure how someone could make the bed and not notice them. The reception area is also extremely small. There are only two small tables to sit at, and every time we passed through they seemed to be occupied. Overall, Hotel Mi Rochor isn’t a terrible hotel. The location is excellent and it provides reasonably convenient accommodation for exploring Singapore. However, the poor shower, very hard beds, late housekeeping, bedding cleanliness and other smaller annoyances added up. Given how highly rated the hotel is, I expected considerably better. If I returned to Singapore, I would definitely look at alternative hotels before choosing to stay here again.
