During our Zanzibar familiarization trip, we had the opportunity to stay at AHG Sun Bay Mlilile for one night and complete a site inspection the following morning. This property offers a very different experience from many of the luxury resorts we visited during our trip. It's geared more toward travelers looking for a comfortable, budget-friendly stay while still enjoying the beauty of Zanzibar. One thing we appreciated is that AHG Sun Bay offers affordable all-inclusive packages, making it a great value for travelers who want meals and drinks included without the higher price tag often associated with island resorts. They also offer complimentary Wi-Fi, are kid-friendly, and have a small on-site shop where guests can pick up any essentials they may have forgotten. The resort has two restaurants, and while the buffet-style dinner offered a nice variety, my favorite part of the meal was definitely the freshly grilled fish—it was delicious! The cocktails were enjoyable as well and complemented the relaxed atmosphere of the resort. The property also features a spa, and I especially loved the peaceful outdoor setting surrounding it. It created a calm environment that fit perfectly with the slower pace of the resort. One thing the General Manager shared with us during our visit really stood out: the resort is intentionally designed for guests looking to slow down, disconnect, and simply relax. If you're someone who enjoys spending your days reading by the pool, taking quiet walks along the beach, or unwinding without a packed itinerary, this could be a great fit. In the evenings, guests are treated to live music during dinner, which added a lovely touch to the overall experience and created a warm, welcoming atmosphere. From our perspective, there are a few areas where the property could continue to improve. During our stay, we noticed that some guest room furnishings and linens could benefit from a bit more attention to detail and refreshing. Cleanliness and presentation play an important role in every guest's experience, regardless of a property's price point, and we believe these small improvements would make an even stronger impression. Overall, AHG Sun Bay Mlilile isn't positioned as a luxury resort, nor does it try to be—and that's perfectly okay. Every traveler has different priorities and budgets. While it isn't the type of property we typically book for our luxury clientele at Butiama & Beyond, we would happily recommend it to travelers looking for an affordable way to experience Zanzibar, especially those who value a peaceful atmosphere, friendly service, and excellent value for money. If you're searching for a relaxed, budget-conscious beach getaway with affordable all-inclusive options, AHG Sun Bay Mlilile is certainly worth considering. 🤍🌊
We have just returned from a two week stay at this hotel and cannot wait until we can return again. The hotel offers a truly relaxing stay with excellent staff and good food. The beach is perfection and whilst there are many beach sellers trying to make a living, they are polite and respectful. We stayed in an ocean front room which was well maintained and cleaned daily. If you’re looking for the glitz and glam of a busy hotel with lots to do every day this is not for you. I’d however you want a beautiful, peaceful and relaxing break it is perfection. Staff take time to remember your name, notice when you’ve missed a meal service and are generally just lovely. Nothing was too much trouble and the massage service was very good. The manager was present every day and the hotel seemed to work like clockwork with guests wellbeing and enjoyment at the centre of everything. There are always things that could be improved upon and I guess for me I would suggest that real glass was used during the evenings rather than the plastic that was offered for anything other than wine. But if that’s the only thing I could complain about then that says everything about our stay! We will be back for sure …
Small, very nice, and relaxing hotel. The staff was excellent- providing superb service! Even putting flowers on our beds in the morning. The hotel is very small, but more than enough room at the pool and beach. Room is a bit dated- shows signs of wear. Swimming in the ocean really depended on the tide- too low to swim in the morning, but around 12pm it would rise enough that we could swim (very important to us:) ). Highly recommend!
I had such a lovely stay at AHG Sun Bay Mlilile Beach Hotel. Travelling alone in Zanzibar, I really appreciated how warm and welcoming everyone was. The staff made me feel at home from the very first day. I loved the peaceful atmosphere, the beautiful beach and the food. September was the perfect time to visit, and this hotel made my solo trip even more special. I would definitely come back! Asante🫶🏻🙏
