We arrived into Split, got our hire car and drove to the Apartments, after some false turns we found the right place. We were offered a choice of rooms as it wasn't during the high season and opted for the slightly smaller room but with views out to the sea, rather than the bigger upper floor room with views of Biokovo Mtn, just because we are really big water people. I was equally impressed and embarrassed when our host brought out 2 beers when he asked if we'd like a water or juice and I'd said "No worries, it's cool. We'll get some beers when we go out for lunch soon." You have to love mis-translation when all he understood was 'beer' and was gone and back with them before I could explain! We bought replacements and they didn't take them back, such a lovely and amazing couple. We enjoyed picking grapes off the vine on our balcony, watching the boats far out on the water, watching the thunderstorm roll in and out on our last day (ok, maybe that was just me enjoying that, not my fiance!) and the easy walk down then slow plod back up from the waterfront when we would go out to dinner. While it may feel a struggle, it's better than trying to drive and find (and pay for) a car park and it's quieter when you do want to go to bed rather than staying closer to the action. We fully intend on visiting Croatia again and would definitely stay here again.

First of all the transfer to Baska Voda takes just over 1 hour in low season, in high season it can take up to 2 ½ hours due to heavier traffic. The self-catering Ruza apartments are lovely with everything you need. There’s air con which I didn’t think I’d use but the nights got uncomfortably hot as the week went on. I think there was only one English language TV channel, most of them were German. Rosa & her husband don’t speak much English either so if you get really stuck, Paula next door is fluent! The location is great for buses into Split &/or Dubrovnik but you have to walk through a building site to get to the bus stop! The builders didn’t mind a bit but it wasn’t great having to do that. The [pebbly] beach is only about 5 mins away but the road from the apartment is very steep which could be a problem for anyone with mobility issues. Although the beach is pebbly it’s still OK for sunbathing & the water is nice & clear. There are enough bars/restaurants around as well as a supermarket. Boat trips to the surrounding islands looked quite interesting but I didn’t go on any of those. I took the bus to Split, roughly 90 mins to get there but well worth it & the timetable was pretty reliable. Dubrovnik took a lot longer & you need to make sure [which I didn’t] you leave as early as possible. The timetable said 3 hours journey but it was almost 5 hours before we arrived & because I left Baska Voda at 1pm there was no time to look around, I had to get straight back on the bus again. Also, as we have to pass through Bosnia there are passport checks so don’t forget to take yours with you! For vegans/vegetarians there’s limited choice in Baska Voda but the supermarket, Konzum, sells spinach & ricotta filled pastries & potato ones which look like long sausage rolls! While in Split I went to UP Caffe, a vegan restaurant where I was in food heaven! I would definitely recommend this resort for those looking for tranquillity & scenic beauty. I’d like to go back at some point, maybe I’ll get to see Dubrovnik next time!
