How do you begin to describe a five-star hotel? Is it the rooms, the architecture, the palm trees and the beach? Or is it the people — the maids, the waiters, the bar staff and everyone in between? At Dreams Playa Esmeralda, you have all of these things. This is a beautiful resort in a stunning setting, and rather than spending too much time describing the hotel itself, there are plenty of walkthroughs and videos across various platforms that will give you a good feel for the resort. Instead, I want to focus on something that, for me, is what really makes a five-star hotel: attention to detail. And this is where I think Dreams Playa Esmeralda has an exciting opportunity. The foundations are already there — the design, the location, the facilities and, importantly, some genuinely wonderful members of staff. With a little more consistency and attention to the smaller details, I think this resort could become something really special. These are some of the things we noticed during our stay. Before you arrive The guest experience starts before you even reach the resort. Being able to easily contact the hotel, make requests and feel that someone is genuinely trying to accommodate those requests can make such a difference. A responsive email address and a little personal attention before arrival immediately create the feeling that your holiday matters. These may seem like small things, but they set the tone for the whole stay. The rooms The rooms are modern, stylish and beautifully designed, and there are some lovely high-tech touches. The room service hatches are a great idea, and the stop/go feature to indicate when your room is free for housekeeping is both clever and practical. There are, however, a few small additions that could make the rooms even better. Outdoor small drying racks for swimwear would be a great addition, for example, rather than guests having to use coat hangers on their balconies. Making sure every room is fully prepared for arrival, with bathrobes, sufficient coffee supplies such as milk and plenty of practical storage, would also help. Then there are the little maintenance details that inevitably become more noticeable in a new five-star resort — things such as a power socket coming away slightly, a coffee capsule box lid that doesn’t quite stay in place, a cracked floor tile or a bath plug that doesn’t work as it should, hot and cold taps being on the right way around. None of these things individually would spoil a holiday, but together they are exactly the sort of details that can make the difference between a very good room and a truly exceptional one. Even something as simple as making sure curtains and nets can be opened with rods so the fabric isn’t marked, or removing construction codes from balcony panels, would give the rooms that extra finished feel. The television could also be made as straightforward as possible, with a reliable signal and a welcome channel that doesn’t regularly pixelate. And, in a modern five-star resort, reliable Wi-Fi throughout the property should really be a given. Bathrooms and restaurants Again, these are beautifully designed spaces, but there are opportunities to make them even better. The tissue boxes in the bathrooms are a good example. They look attractive within their wooden surrounds, but in some cases the design makes dispensing the tissues unnecessarily difficult. The restaurants themselves are stylish and impressive, and with a little ongoing attention to details such as cupboard doors, fittings, upholstery and decorative cushions, they could look consistently immaculate. The tables and floors should be cleaned thoroughly before welcoming the next guests, the buffet seating area should also smell nice. One particularly practical suggestion for the communal bathrooms would be hooks behind the toilet doors. For guests carrying handbags or small belongings, this would be a very welcome addition. And in the recreational areas, keeping equipment in excellent condition is another small detail that contributes to the overall five-star feel. The hotel app The hotel app is a really useful addition and has the potential to make the guest experience much easier. There are just a few areas where it could be refined. Having to occasionally select the hotel again, limited ability to zoom in on the resort map and the presence of a “default” restaurant can make it feel slightly less intuitive than it could be. The daily activity programme is another area where accuracy is important. If an activity is advertised, guests should be able to rely on the description and timings. These are relatively straightforward improvements that could make an already useful app even better. The service One of the biggest strengths of Dreams Playa Esmeralda is its people. For the most part, we found the staff friendly, welcoming and keen to help. As with any large resort, consistency can sometimes be difficult, but that consistency is particularly important when aiming for a five-star experience. For example, when two guests order the same dish, you would naturally expect the presentation and accompaniments to be consistent. The same applies to bar service. A clear and consistent approach to serving guests helps everyone feel equally valued. A good selection of drinks menus, perhaps including a cocktail of the day, could also encourage guests to explore more of what the bars have to offer. For guests who haven’t upgraded to Preferred Club, particularly families travelling with children, having plenty of comfortable areas to sit and enjoy an evening drink would be another welcome touch. We also found the Sports Bar particularly cold during our stay, which made it difficult to sit and enjoy the facilities for any length of time. A little adjustment here would make the space much more inviting. The positives Don’t get me wrong — this is a beautiful hotel. The interior design is stunning. The gardens are gorgeous. The beach is absolutely beautiful. The warm white lighting throughout the resort creates a relaxed, sophisticated, high-end atmosphere, particularly in the evening. The resort has a wonderful sense of space, and there are so many little details that show real thought has gone into the design. And the staff really can make a difference. We had some issues during our stay, but being able to report them through the hotel app was extremely useful. When we raised concerns, we were assisted by Justo, who was incredibly attentive, helpful and genuinely keen to resolve things. That level of customer service deserves recognition. It is also worth acknowledging how much the resort appears to have developed. The hotel is still relatively new and, from what I’ve read about its earlier days, it has already come a long way. Even recent comments about pool cleanliness need to be put into perspective. During our stay, we saw staff cleaning the pools throughout the day, which showed that the resort is clearly taking pride in maintaining its facilities. Our holiday highlights For us, two experiences really stood out. Our meal and service at 1844 were a genuine highlight. It was the sort of experience that reminded us exactly what Dreams Playa Esmeralda can deliver when everything comes together. And then there was the snorkelling. We walked to the left of the hotel, where the water was beautifully calm, and were incredibly lucky to see both a barracuda and a stingray. For me, that was a once-in-a-lifetime moment and one of the memories I will take away from this holiday. For me, this review isn’t about expecting perfection. It’s about recognising that Dreams Playa Esmeralda already has so much going for it and highlighting the small things that could take it from very good to exceptional. The setting is incredible. The beach is beautiful. The design is impressive. The technology is innovative. The gardens are gorgeous. And there are some fantastic members of staff who clearly care about the guest experience. The hotel has bags of potential. Listen to the feedback. Keep improving the small things. Maintain consistency. Celebrate the staff who go above and beyond. Because Dreams Playa Esmeralda already has the setting, the design and the foundations to be something really special. The perfect blend.

I spent a wonderful week at Dreams Playa Esmeralda with my family and friends, and we had an amazing time! I absolutely loved the beach beautiful, clean, and, best of all, no seaweed! There were so many activities to enjoy, including the water slides. The snacks were delicious, and the restaurants offered a great variety. My favorites were the Japanese restaurant and the Window Restaurant for Preferred Club members. The shows were good, but what I enjoyed most was the amazing staff and their exceptional service. They truly went above and beyond to make our stay special. Our butler, Mike, was fantastic, a true superhero for all of us! He was always focused on making our stay memorable and ensuring we had everything we needed. Bianca from the Window Restaurant also treated us like family. She went the extra mile and even personally prepared a delicious morir soñando for us, made with passion fruit (chinola) juice and milk. It was absolutely wonderful! And the entertainment team was on another level. What a talented and energetic group of young people! They brought so much fun and positive energy to the resort. Thank you Bubalu Blakaout, Lizmary, La libreta, Pumba Mini baby, Moana. Alexander from the coffee place and Ezequiel was every where helping for a great service. Overall, we had an unforgettable vacation, and the incredible employees were a huge part of what made our experience so special. I would definitely recommend Dreams Playa Esmeralda!

10/10 experience celebrating babymoon and my husbands birthday. I’m not sure why people on Tik Tok are saying the food is bad because I’m a true foodie and honestly the restaurants + buffet + room service was delicious! The Picanha at room service was delicious!! If you come with a family especially with a toddler like us, highly recommend getting the oceanfront swim up at the preferred side! Our butler MAIKY was AMAAAZINGGGGGG. Highly recommend asking for him if you can! Super quick with all the requests and I love how sometimes if my daughter is hungry I place a room service order, I can text him on WhatsApp to see if he can hurry the order (and he really does so it arrives super super fast). They also surprised us with champagne twice and a (really delicious) birthday cake for my husband which was SOOOOO sweet. They also clean the room TWICE a day so make sure to leave tips twice since it’s different ladies. It’s a huge help with how messy the room gets with a todddler. We love going out to the swim out every time she has a nap and just listen to the ocean breeze. Also if you’re a preferred member trust me when I say the preferred pool and à la carte restaurant is 10000% worth the upgrade. It’s so much nicer, quieter and more delicious. And the restaurant is available for breakfast lunch AND dinner which is pretty rare! We had the best 7 days here and can’t wait to come back again :)
