Let me start in reverse. We had checked out after a 3 night stay and were waiting for our transport in the lobby. In a fleeting moment of unpreparedness, a monkey came from behind and took some of the contents of a breakfast box we had. Straightaway, a staff member (Krishna) came from the desk and asked us not to use the remainder of the box, as the monkey had touched it. He said he will get a breakfast box made for us. Soon, someone came with not one but two identical breakfast boxes for us. The staff steadfastly refused our offer to pay for these and said it was up to them to look after us. All this was after check out! This was the supreme example of the exceptional service we had experienced all through our 3 night stay. If there is one thing which stands out at Alila Ubud, it is the service we received- whether it was at the lobby, the restaurants, room service or anything else. The other positive is how the resort blends seamlessly with nature, including the local materials used in the construction. The 4-times-a-day shuttle to town centre is convenient. Departures at 10.30, 12.30, 2.30 and 4.30 from the hotel for the ~30 minute trip. The room while being comfortable had some aspects which we didn’t like, not that these aspects spoiled our holiday. 1. The bed (very comfortable mattress) did not have a backrest, making it very hard to sit on the bed for reading. 2. The lights in the room were inadequate for reading. There is no reading light. 3. The washbasin was looking old and worn out. It didn’t look clean even after cleaning. 4. It would be nice to have a savoury element as part of the afternoon tea - it is sweet cakes only. We were in room 112 (king bed deluxe), upgraded at check in from king bed superior. We had used the 3 night escape package - which we found very worthwhile- with lunch or dinner, afternoon tea, an evening drink, a 60 minute massage and daily morning activity included - in addition to daily breakfast. I would happily stay here another time.

Hotel is comfortable and amenities are fantastic. Location is near to activities as well. Air is fresh but with lots of monkeys especially start of day-time until afternoon may not make it a totally comfortable stay. The monkeys will be playing at the balcony and swimming pool (if your room has a swimming pool), making it totally useless paying so much more and not being able to use the room facilities comfortably. Halal food options can be handled better. The tree terrace villa was comfortable and clean but lighting options are too dim. We will stay there again if the halal food experience is improvised. Otherwise a comfortable overall stay!

We had a very mixed stay here. TLDR= if we’d booked this as a low price hotel we’d be happy and I doubt any of the below would be noteworthy - but we paid almost US$700 per night. The front desk service is poor and the facilities are dated and lacking. Full details: We had a villa with a private pool which was great. As other reviews have commented though, and as a number of online blogs have identified, the rooms are dated and tired. Our shower chose its own temperature and pressure - the dials/buttons didn’t actually control anything. Our mosquito net around the bed had large holes in it. The tv is fine but clearly very old technology (maybe 20 channels, few in English, no streaming or casting ability). The products in the shower are unbranded and of really poor quality. The front desk are robotic and don’t follow up on issues (our laundry didn’t arrive back, the gym had no air conditioning at all in 32 degree Bali so was unusable, we were late for our dinner reservation one night as we had to chase them to call a cab and then they didn’t call ahead to the restaurant as we asked). Suspect their English lets them down, but we’ve stayed at other resorts in Indonesia and on Bali this trip and the English has been significantly better. Again, not a huge issue, except where paying $700 a night in a tourist hotel for almost no one at the front desk to have a good enough standard of English. We tried the main hotel restaurant one night. We waited 1h45 for our main courses. The waiter was (genuinely) very apologetic and it wasn’t his fault but it seems like they were too focused on giving the impression of an “elevated” experience without the ability to deliver that. We followed up on the issues with the front desk multiple times during our stay and at check out. By email, we got the same robotic response from the front desk “we apologise for your inconvenience”… The positives - the wait staff in the restaurant were mostly fantastic, the food is very good, the pool is beautiful and our villa, while dated, was comfortable and spacious. But at the price point, there are significantly better places to stay in the same area and we would not return.
