The Meru Sanur

We stayed at The Meru Sanur on September 20 for our anniversary and booked a Tropical Garden Suite. We arrived around 3:15 PM after almost 12 hours on the road, and I had been driving the whole time, so my wife told me to just sit down and rest while she handled the check-in. Around 3:35 PM, she was assisted by a receptionist, I think his name was Damar or Danar, the one wearing glasses. He told her that we were staying in a Deluxe Tropical Suite. My wife said no, we booked a Tropical Garden Suite, and showed him the booking confirmation. Then he said we had been upgraded, but there would be an extra charge of IDR 400,000 per night. My wife said no thanks. Honestly, up to this point, no issue. If it costs extra, it costs extra. What made it awkward was another male staff member standing behind him. Right after my wife declined, this guy gave a small laugh. Maybe it had nothing to do with her, I really don’t know, so I’m not accusing anyone of anything. But the timing was just bad. My wife was there alone, had just said no to the upgrade, then someone behind the desk laughed. Of course she started thinking it was about her. After that, the same guy moved to the welcome/holy water area and was still laughing and chatting with some of the other front office staff. Again, maybe totally unrelated, but by then she was already uncomfortable. Then the receptionist called someone to confirm the room situation. From what my wife heard, he was explaining that she didn’t want the upgrade because of the extra charge. After the call, suddenly the upgrade was complimentary. By around 3:50 PM we were already heading to the room, and around 4 PM we were inside the Deluxe Tropical Suite. The room was already fully prepared, with our anniversary decoration and a complimentary cake. So this is where I got confused. In the same check-in, the upgrade went from IDR 400,000 per night to free, and a few minutes later we were in a room that looked like it had already been prepared for us anyway. The annoying part is that the hotel itself is actually really good. Facilities are great, food is good and there’s plenty of choice, lots of activities, nice atmosphere, good location, and the room was also very nice. We really appreciated the anniversary setup and the cake too. So this is not me saying The Meru is a bad hotel, because it isn’t. But when your wife is already upset and embarrassed in the first 10 or 15 minutes, the rest of the stay just feels a bit different. We still enjoyed it, but the mood at the start was already gone.

Marnik gave a wonderful massage, would highly recommend cisiting the spa

Arika and Manik at the Meru Spa were amazing. Very attentive, skilled hands and perfect amount of pressure. Highly recommended a massage from either Arika and Manik!

We had a wonderful stay at the Meru. It was our third stay. Staff very friendly and helpful . One staff member in the Arunika restaurant Kira was very professional and friendly. Kira went out of her way to help us. We feel that the menu could be updated . Will definitely be back next .
