Hotel Costa Calero Thalasso & Spa

Great hotel lovely surroundings but very disappointed with choice of vegetarian dishes. Tuesday 29th September went for evening meal and I chose the vegetable cannelloni as described by the label. Upon eating I discovered that there was tuna in the meal. Very disappointed as I have been vegetarian for 40 years. I approached Stefano the manager he was very apologetic and immediately withdrew the cannelloni off display. This spoilt a enjoyable evening with my husband as it was our 44 year wedding anniversary. Sadly we have booked to return on christmas eve for a weeks stay as we do like the hotel so much. Hopefully the vegetarian meals are better labelled.

Fantastic hotel! I stayed for 5 nights as a solo traveller and wished I had booked a full week. I stayed on the prestige package and for me this was worth the extra money simply for being able to use the spa every day. The amazing choice of drinks that are available as part of that upgrade was outstanding too. However I do also think even on a standard AI package the selection was much better than many hotels I’ve been to before. Room was huge and very well appointed, maybe needs a bit of a touch up here and there but who goes on holiday to spend loads of time in the room anyway. Always cleaned to a high standard and mini bar was always full when I returned to the room in the late afternoon. Food was good, AI food is always going to be subjective to personal taste but i always found something I wanted to eat and it was always of good quality. I do not have a sweet tooth so for me to say that dessert selection was amazing is very high praise, I am normally not that fussed yet found myself picking up a few sweet treats every evening. Breakfast was always good and being able to have fresh orange juice, good coffee and made to order eggs was fantastic too. Lunch for me would be the least favourite meal but it most often is because I’d love to see a selection of sandwiches to have rather than hot food. Plenty of sunloungers, yes some people up playing the towel game early but for the most part there was always somewhere you could find to place yourself whatever time of day. The only thing I found a bit strange was the location of the prestige sun lounger area, it was very cut off from the pools, bars or bathrooms so i didn’t use them. Service was generally good, there is a lot of reviews on here criticising the staff but on the most part I found them helpful, quick and friendly. There was an odd one or two who were a bit slow and they definitely need to review the bar situation in the evening. Only one bar open from 6-9 pm in the evening and it’s a very small bar which means only a couple of staff can work it at a time resulting in large queues. Why not open the much larger bar where the entertainment takes place earlier which would make things a whole lot easier. My only negative was the room card use for getting drinks and lunch. If you are AI with a band on I don’t get why also need to use room card. I understand there are many people on different board basis staying but why not have one band for each of the two types of AI then anyone not wearing a band would need to use their room card. It was frustrating and also inconsistent as some members of staff would ask for it and some would not so the system is not even working properly. Overall this is a great 4 star hotel, yes there are areas that need some additional work such as around the pool but in the grand scheme of things is not the end of the world. I can see why so many people return to this hotel time and time again. I for one will be returning at some point in the future.

Nice to be back at the Costa calero after a 3 year absence. Prior to many continuous visits in the last 10 years. Very pleasantly surprised by how the refurbishment to the hotel has improved and modernised to a high standard. For example reception and main dining room. Nice to see quite a few older and experienced members of staff who are still working here and still greet us with a smile and helpfulness. Breakfast and dinner service is very good with plenty of choices of hot freshly cooked food, P.S vegetarian options still limited at evening meal. My complaint at the moment is lunchtime. This is our second day here we arrived on the 24th September , lunchtime is a bit chaotic, there are tables that have been cleared but not reset immediately, people having to re lay their own table with cutlery and condiments. Also quite a few of the food items very slow to be restocked making choices limited. During this period there are some older experienced members of staff who are tirelessly working hard. As on previous visits to the hotel supervision standards at lunchtime was higher. I would like to say this my observation and opinion. Still I would recommend the hotel as I have booked to comeback over the Christmas period.

Unfortunately with how busy and demanding my job is I haven’t had the appropriate time to write this review. But I had to give feedback at some point. Sadly one person at this hotel ruined our holiday with her shocking and disrespectful attitude. It’s important to mention that other members of staff apologised and tried to remedy the terrible behaviour of this so called public relations manager which is laughable. The hotel, the several pools and many other staff were actually very good. I would actually recommend the hotel but then I can’t down to Zara who was just a terrible person. On requesting something that I assumed was available her attitude was dismissive, arrogant and down right rude ! I have never been so offended, disrespected and taken offence to anyone or anything when I have been on vacation. If you read my previous reviews it proves I commend good service, good staff and good hotels. However my experience with this particular woman was the worst I’ve experienced. Her arrogant attitude I still find hard to accept and the rudeness of her shouting and belittling me in public are beyond reproach. I can accept people making mistakes but she offered no remorse or no apology. Even though the manager called me and apologised and met me and again apologised sadly Zara never did. If she still works there which I will be surprised about she shouldn’t be and working in the area she does. I’m my line of work I would release someone like her on the spot. She is a terrible representation of the hotel !!! Again I must reiterate that the majority of staff were good and the hotel was excellent but I will never return because of Zara in public relations. I will and will continue to not recommend this hotel solely down to this bad member of staff.

Spent a week here arriving on the 13th of September , staying in a select junior suite. We arrived late at night and after a quick check in were directed to the restaurant were there was a cold buffet. We then went to our room which was fine , but a bit tired. The mini bar was not stocked , no bathrobes and various other extras that should have been in the room were missing. Reported this to reception twice and also emailed the hotel….this was eventually resolved on the third day. Breakfast was fine the next morning , but became repetitive after the 3rd day , as did the meals at dinner time. Lunch time meals were held in the outside restaurant beside the pool bar , which was very warm and resembled a works canteen. The sliding doors on the cooler units holding the salads etc were broken or missing altogether meaning food in these compartments was open to the elements. The ice cream resembled yoghurt in its consistency , and the food was very repetitive at lunchtime. Entertainment in the evenings was poor , the entertainment in the piano bar (when it was on) was average. Never seen anybody playing the piano when we were there. In general the drinks at the various bars were good , although there could be queues at times , especially in the piano bar in the evening. The pool area could do with a major overhaul , dirty loungers , tables , broken tiles , uneven surfaces , and the wall from the upper pool to the lower pool is a mess…! Landscaping around the hotel in general also needs looked at. Wi-fi was ok within the hotel , but around the pool area was very inconsistent. The marina down the steep hill from the hotel is a nice place for a stroll with various restaurants a supermarket and a few shops. There is also a small twice weekly market. We were given a voucher for a two hour session in the Spa, which was enjoyable , apart from the rude receptionist. Most of the staff just did there jobs , but that was it , no interest in talking to the guests. We will not be returning to the Hotel Costa Calero.
