Hotel Costa Calero Thalasso & Spa

Room Spacious, with balcony and chairs to look out over the hotel complex and a great view of the sea. The bed was comfortable and huge. The bathroom had an excellent shower and was well stocked with toiletries. Cleaners refreshed it each day, washing the tiled floor as well. Food and drinks Stunning! Over the space of a week, every type of meat imaginable from chicken to squid was on offer at some point, much of it cooked in front of you. Also on offer was a huge range of vegetables/vegetarian options. Indoor/outdoor seating options available, never had any issues in the restaurants. Several kilograms have been added to the waistline. As for the drinks, they stock all the beer, wine and spirits you would want. Pool Loads of beds available near the 4 pools. Probably some reserved from early but when we arrived at midday or after lunch, never had trouble finding somewhere nice to sit. Entertainment/activities during the day and in the evening - excellent. Kids clubs available. Spa - excellent Complimentary bus transport into/from Puerto del Carmen each day. Harbour is a five minute walk away and a supermarket even closer. A final plus on the last day way being able to use all the hotel facilities up to 6.00pm after checking out at 12.00. Staff were polite though a little impersonal at times, not much small talk or conversation. A few furniture imperfections can be found around the hotel but these were minor and generally everything is in good condition. Those are probably the only negative things I could say about the entire stay.

SUMMARY The hotel is located in a great place, literally a 5 minute walk to Puerto Calero marina. Lots of restaurants, Irish bars showing football, rugby league etc. If you get bored of the food at the hotel, you have plenty of choice down at the marina. My biggest gripe was the prestige upgrade. De-valuing the all inclusive package to make you feel inferior, so you upgrade to a premium package which you should be all ready receiving is a rip off. The prestige package is what everyone would receive in Turkey or similar resorts. It never comes down to money for me, its the principle. Another point, the ridiculous card system. Just give people a band like every other hotel in Europe. I dont want to be carrying cards around, particularly women who only wear bikinis through the day. So review as follows; POSITIVES First impression, the lobby area is great and lovely on an evening to have some drinks. The terrace offers some stunning views and sun sets. It should be open throughout the day too, but again it just lets the hotel down. The staff and entertainment is a credit to the hotel. Our room was a good size and the upgrade to a family suite was welcomed . The view was great and appreciated it every morning over looking the ocean. Grounds - swimming pools are very good but too many stupid rules. The grounds are well maintained and look great. A very tropical feel with the palm trees and flowers. The spa was nice and the free 2 hours is a nice touch. NEGATIVES The sun lounges are the basic ones and not padded. The walk ways leading to the pools are a little tired and require some maintenance. Attention to detail is missing in areas of the grounds where concrete or tiles are missing. Entertainment - Absolute rubbish in the main area. Just stop doing it as its so amateur and not entertaining at all. Walked out on two seperate occasions due to the embarrassing standard. The piano room is pleasant though and offers a better atmosphere. Food - Very repetitive but always something to eat and some of it was very nice. As mentioned before, the marina is a great alternative. The breakfast was nice, particularly the porridge and honey. Just needs more theme nights and more Spanish food such as small tapas dishes etc. Staff - Some staff are boarder line rude and seem very un happy. Not good enough and dont seem to accept feedback including the Jet2 rep. The toiletries had a weird bleachy smell to it. Complained but not changed as communicated. The room wasnt deep cleaned in the shower area, again a bit grubby. I complained to the Jet2 rep but nothing was done about it. This hotel could be so much better, but get rid of the prestige package or rename it adults only package. The card system is a poor choice and learn from places such as Greece and Turkey. They do AI so much better than this hotel.

Hotel Costa Calero – A Nice Hotel, But Not Quite 5-Star All-Inclusive We stayed at Hotel Costa Calero in Lanzarote for 5 nights on an all-inclusive basis. Overall, we had a relaxing stay in a lovely, quiet location, but there were enough disappointments to make us feel that this is more of a 4-star all-inclusive than a 5-star experience. 👍 The Good The hotel itself is attractive, with a lovely reception, entrance and lobby. Our ground-floor room was clean, comfortable and well maintained, with a small artificial-grass area and three sun loungers — a really nice feature. The beds were very comfortable, and housekeeping was excellent. Our room was cleaned every day, although on some mornings the maid arrived before 9:30am. The three swimming pools are excellent — clean, tidy, plenty of sunbeds and very well maintained. The saltwater pool was definitely the warmest. The hotel is also in a great, peaceful location. It’s a lovely walk down to Puerto Calero Marina, which has some excellent restaurants, cafés and coffee shops. We actually had some of our best food and proper coffee there, and the staff were extremely friendly. The hotel also offers a free bus to Puerto del Carmen, which is a useful service. 👎 The Not So Good We arrived at around 10pm, and although a cold buffet had been prepared for our arrival, there was nowhere else to eat. So be aware that despite being all-inclusive, this is not a 24-hour food service. The biggest disappointment for us was lunch. The outdoor lunch area needs updating, the food was poor and we were also disappointed with the cleanliness of the glasses and water dispenser. After two days, we gave up on hotel lunches and ate locally instead — luckily, Puerto Calero has plenty of excellent options. Breakfast was good and the evening restaurant is lovely, but the evening meals were quite repetitive. For five nights it was manageable, but if you’re staying for a week or more, I think you’d quickly become bored with the selection. The restaurant staff were polite but, unfortunately, the service often felt very much like a routine — taking your drink order and moving on. A little more friendliness and interaction would make a big difference. ☕ The Coffee Situation This really needs mentioning! The standard hotel coffee is from a machine using powdered milk. I asked if I could have a proper barista-made coffee from the daytime bar and was told that it wasn’t included in our package. For an all-inclusive hotel, I think proper coffee should be available to all guests without having to upgrade. 💰 Additional Costs This was another area that surprised us. The room safe costs approximately €35, and we chose not to use it. We also paid a €30 refundable deposit for three pool towels. The deposit is returned at checkout, but make sure you keep your receipt. While these aren’t huge amounts individually, potentially paying around €65–€70 for basic facilities when you’ve already paid for an all-inclusive holiday doesn’t feel particularly good value. 🧖‍♀️ Spa & Gym The gym was good, with a decent selection of equipment. The spa, however, is very dated and needs some serious TLC. It was okay, but certainly not what I’d expect from a hotel promoting itself at the higher end. ⭐ Prestige Package We didn’t purchase the Prestige package, but we looked carefully at what it offered. At around €80 extra per day per couple, we personally couldn’t see the value, particularly as non-drinkers. Prestige guests still eat in the same main restaurant, with their area separated by a small red rope. The main extras appear to be premium alcoholic drinks, a dedicated sunbed area, better-brand ice creams and more extensive spa access. If you’re a big drinker and want premium brands, perhaps it makes more sense. For us, it wouldn’t have been worth the additional cost. 🐜 A Few Other Points We did have some ants in our room, although this wasn’t a major issue and we dealt with it ourselves using some spray. The mini fridge had a bottle of water on arrival and was refilled during our stay, but the hotel mainly provides water through fountains rather than bottled water. As I don’t drink alcohol, I ended up buying bottled water from the nearby SuperDino. I also found the approach from reception regarding taking a credit card number on arrival a little too persistent, and the welcome could have been warmer. ⭐ Final Verdict Would we stay again? Probably — but with realistic expectations. Hotel Costa Calero is a lovely, peaceful hotel with comfortable rooms, fantastic pools and a great location. Puerto Calero Marina is close by and gives you plenty of options if you want to get out of the hotel for food and coffee. However, there are several areas that stop it from feeling like a genuine 5-star all-inclusive experience for us — particularly the poor lunch offering, repetitive evening meals, basic coffee, dated spa and additional charges for facilities. We’ve stayed at several all-inclusive hotels in Lanzarote, and for us this is around a 4-star all-inclusive rather than 5-star. Our biggest recommendations to the hotel: improve the lunch offering and outdoor dining area, provide proper coffee for all guests, invest in the spa, improve staff interaction and reconsider some of the additional charges. Great for: A quiet, adults-only break, relaxing by the pools and enjoying the nearby marina. Less suitable for: Anyone expecting a premium, 5-star all-inclusive experience where everything is included.

We had a wonderful holiday overall at this hotel and the facilities are lovely. However there were several service issues that impacted our stay. The highlight: Monica at the children's club was absolutely amazing. She was so warm, patient and engaging with our kids. She was the standout member of staff and made the kids club a real highlight of our holiday. Areas for improvement: 1. Reception Service On 15th Aug we asked Steffi at reception to book a taxi to the Aquapark. She confirmed she would. The pickup point was a 7-minute walk from our room with 3 young children. By the time we arrived at reception, the taxi had already left. When we asked if she could book another, her response was “I don’t book taxis a second time.” No alternative help was offered. We were lucky to find the same driver waiting nearby ourselves. Later we went back to explain how upset we were. Steffi became argumentative, said she “wasn’t rude,” and sniggered during the conversation. We left feeling dismissed. For a reception role that requires guest care and problem-solving, this fell far short of expectations and really impacted the start of our day. 2. Housekeeping & Room We asked for our bedsheets to be changed but this was not done during our stay. We also had ants in our room. Staff did spray the corners which helped, but the ants returned within 24 hours. A more long-term pest control solution is needed. 3. Restaurant* Some lunchtime staff were not very friendly. In particular, the manager was rushing guests on one day and told us we needed to finish by 3:30pm, which made us feel unwelcome during lunch. Aside from these issues, we enjoyed the hotel and had a lovely holiday. I hope management will review training for reception and restaurant staff, and address housekeeping and pest control. Day 10 of 11 and readying to head home. First impressions are great, the communal areas are open, modern and bright, bedrooms are a decent size (we existed as a family of 3 fine) and the pools are a lovely size. Where it falls down, the food…. The quality is poor by day 4 we were dreading going in for lunch and dinner, it was repetitive and uninspiring. Lunch and dinner is much the same and the offer from the pool bar is non existent. Niggles include having to pay for a safe, no kettle in the room not being able to get a decent coffee. Noise, we had 4 nights where it was incredibly noisy at 00:30/01:00, that may be where our room was (over the restaurant). The location of the hotel is nice, the marina has a lovely selection of restaurants and a couple of shops but it is isolated, we tried to get the bus to Marina Rubicon (Playa Blanca) and missed 2 because they were full. We utilised the feee shuttle to Puerto Del Carmen, if you like Brits Abroad then you’ll love it and the water taxi back was a nice view of the shoreline. Had no problem with Sun Bed wars, but we didn’t use the main pool where it was clear people had been out early doors but the saltwater pool had available beds all day as did the smaller pool. We did notice lots of little nipping flies at the smaller pool. Gym nothing spectacular but has exactly what you need. All in all the value for money just wasn’t there for us, we have never been on a holiday where we have dreaded the food and this is comfortably the most we have spent on a holiday.
