Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree

Beautiful resort, fantastic facilities and great location ideally suited for tourists who want to spend overnight after a tiring day at the zoo. Was a terrible idea for my staycation. The service staff were like automatons, some were plain rude or having to constantly apologize for unavailability of services or solutions. Access to the Premises: We drove in after a tiring day at the zoo but I was disappointed to learn that the car park is 100m ahead of the lobby so we parked the car and found there was no direct lobby access had to take a short tour of the premises, go up a level and come down. Check in process: The lobby was buzzing like an Indian railway station staff running helter skelter. I was an Accor club member and had priority check in so just sat at the priority desk. While that was relatively smooth, they forgot to give us a welcome drink and didn't bother to enquire about our bags so didn't arrange baggage services. Fortunately I was well trained in Singapore self service. So I had to pay parking drive my car to the lobby drop off the bags and drive bag to the car park. Activities: I called a day earlier to my check in to book the night nature walk and I was told it was fully booked and they didn't have any alternate activities the kids play area closed at 7PM and so was the pool. So we retired to our room. No early morning nature walk option just a complementary tour of the premises which I already had en route from the car park to the lobby. This compared to nature resorts in India where there are plethora of nature activities to plan, we often had an assigned nature biologist we could consult and would join us on bird sighting and other activities. No such option here. To be fair they are more like a convenient airport hotel where you have easy access to the Zoo activities. Breakfast: We came in for breakfast an hour before it was closing but 30 mins before closure beware don't leave an unattended plate every time we stepped out to get something someone would clear our plates without checking if we were done. The menu was average but they had a self service juicer which was fun activity for my daughter. Check out: We finally got out welcome drink vouchers prior to check out, after waiting for 15 mins at the priority desk I gave up and checked out at the front desk, while leaving the staff strolled in after 30 mins to the priority desk. I told him the desk should be called the Last priority desk in humor since we had already checked out, he rudely asked what my membership status and then wrongly informed me I was not eligible for priority check out according to his manager. My final courtesy to the hotel was to send them the membership privileges for their records. So all in all a premium price for bad hospitality, some rude, some due to the lack of planned service options, some due to capacity constraints

He kindly arranged for four lovely restaurant staff members to surprise my husband with a birthday celebration during breakfast. Their cheerful smiles, birthday song, and genuine warmth made the occasion incredibly special for our family. My sincere appreciation also goes to Ms. Jacelyn and the booking team. Thank you for your professionalism, thoughtful arrangements, and excellent service. From the reservation process to our departure, everything was handled with great care and attention to detail. I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The service was outstanding, and the staffs were friendly, attentive, and professional throughout my visit. Thank you to Sophia, Rohin and Yan Aung ( 3234) for making our stay comfortable. A special thank you to Mr. Ali for delivering our food to the room promptly, with a sincere smile. He also surprised my children with chocolates, which was a thoughtful gesture that they truly appreciated. His kindness, attention to detail, and willingness to go the extra mile made our stay even more enjoyable. Team members like them are a true asset to the hotel and deserve to be acknowledged for their dedication and outstanding hospitality. Thank you.

We gave it a 3-star review because of the following reasons: 1. One of the complimentary bottles of water (in a box kind) was partially consumed by the last hotel guest, was capped, and placed back on top of the shelf like as if it’s a new bottle. We informed the staff and were given a carton of water as an apology. There was no other service recovery offered during the 2-night stay. House keeping standard is questionable, this is a very serious issue. What could have happened was that one of us, drank the water and fell ill. Banyan Tree can judge for themselves if this is acceptable in the first place. 2. The situation at the pool area was horrendous. Table with shades are limited due to the narrow walkway around the pool. There were not enough to cater to hotel guests and so they placed plastic chairs along the walkway, narrowing the already narrow space between the pool and the deck. 3. Breakfast quality was sub-standard. There were four coffee machines but all four either ran out of coffee beans or milk each time we tried to get coffee. Every time I walked past, someone will be having issues with the machine. The best part is, regardless which coffee (latte, cappuccino or flat white) you chose, they all taste the same- blend. Staff were not empathetic or apologetic when asked to replenish the beans or milk. Maybe they were overwhelmed by the amount of work they need to handle due to peak hour breakfast crowd. Plates were not collected even they pushed the trolley up and down a few times, not knowing how to set priorities. Most disgusted by the first reason and not being offered a sincere apology or service recovery.

Foresty and roomy, this hotel room makes you feel like you’re living alongside the forests of Mandai. A guy called Toby helped us to our rooms and he was very friendly and answered our questions. Spending time in the room was an attraction of its own.
