Hotel was stunning - very clean and well maintained. Rooms are lovely with everything you could need. Initially we were not overly happy with the location of our room (close to entrance gate and generator) and staff immediately showed as other options which led to us upgrading to a villa (we paid additional for this) with private beach and pool which was amazing. Location of hotel is fabulous! Staff were lovely and very helpful. Food great and lots of choice in terms of drinks (we were all inclusive). I am gluten free and food was very clearly labelled with a seperate gluten free breakfast service plus chef came out on first night to talk me through options and offered to cook whatever I liked. They have gf pizza, pasta, cakes, bread (think it was supposed to be bread!). On occasions service was a little slow. Beach boys were very annoying - you could not venture onto the beach without being hounded/followed by them wanting to sell you something. Luckily some of the beach was private so they could not cross a certain point. Excursions expensive - that said we did a private boat tour via the hotel and they could not do enough for us to make sure the trip met our expectations. Everything needs to be paid in USD - do not take out money via the hotel as they charge an extortionate transaction fee (20%!!) Luckily with the help of one of the staff we were able to negotiate this fee down. Card transactions get charged a 4% transaction fee. All in all we had a wonderful holiday and we would definitely come back to Zanzibar and Lux*.

We had a fantastic family holiday at the Lux Marijani. The service was fantastic, rooms beautiful, dining delicious and the experiences have left a special place in our hearts, in particular the cooking experience with Chef Ahmed. Highly recommend.

I had mixed feelings about my stay at LUX Marijani. There are definitely some lovely aspects to the hotel, and for most of my stay I thought the staff were fantastic — warm, friendly, attentive and genuinely welcoming. However, for a hotel positioned at this level, some of the facilities were disappointing. The gym is very small with limited equipment, and the pool is also quite small and feels dated compared with the rest of the property. The buffet was probably one of the biggest let-downs for me. I found the food quite repetitive and uninspiring, and after a few days it became boring. I would have expected much more variety and quality from a resort of this standard. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment came when I was leaving. As soon as it became apparent that I was checking out, the behaviour of some staff noticeably changed. There was a lot of lingering around while I was preparing to leave and it became uncomfortably obvious that a tip was being expected. I am more than happy to tip when someone has provided great service, but I don’t like feeling pressured into doing so. It actually made me question some of the wonderful service I’d experienced beforehand, because what had initially felt warm and genuine suddenly felt transactional. It’s a shame because there is a lot to like about LUX Marijani and I did have some genuinely lovely interactions with members of staff. With improvements to the buffet, gym and pool area — and a more discreet approach to tipping — the overall experience could be considerably better.
