From the outset, let me state that this hotel is being badly let down by their management company.... TMK Management. The bones of the establishment are good, but not being used to their best advantage and the staff is hamstrung by having to work within poor parameters. On arrival, we were given a pleasant welcome and shown to our room ... Good size, clean but very dated and a bit shabby (not chic!). One of the curtains was hanging down on one side, no nets or voiles, so no privacy with natural light. Very old tired bedding and towels and the pillow case on one of the extra pillows had a fresh watery bloodstain on it. The safe had been removed and in general the storage space is very poor for anything more than a few days stay - we were there for 2wks! The room was kept well by the chambermaid though, so that's a small bonus. Mini fridge was very effective. The bathroom was also dated and there is no thermostatic control or anti-slip mat for the shower. Didn't like that towels are refolded and put back on rails, so you don't know whose is whose. The bathmat wasn't changed at any point in the 2wks of our stay. The 'dining room' is nothing more than a glorified canteen and the food of a similar standard. There is an obscene amount of food wasted, by people collecting multiple heaped plates of food, which they couldn't hope to eat and then leave 80% of it the be thrown away. On several evenings I found this so off putting I couldn't eat. Something definitely needs to be done to take control of this situation. Breakfasts are very samey and dinners of low quality and uninspiring. The bar area is pleasant enough, but the cocktails are awful and hugely over priced. Not real cocktails at all, just a shot of spirit mixed with cheap mixers in a blender, rather than shaken with proper fruit juices bitters etc. Cheapest way to drink in the hotel is to buy wine by the bottle and we were very impressed by the quality of Tunisian wines. Ridiculously, it is not possible to charge any purchase - whether they are from the spa, bar or shop - to your room, everything has to be paid for instantly. We used the spa for a hammam and massage package deal. The word spa is perhaps putting too elegant a name to this facility though. The whole thing is uninviting ... the changing areas are basic and I was supplied with a damp toweling robe, which I suspect was damp due to previous use. The waiting area is tired and best described as grim. The hammam looked like it needed a serious deep clean. The treatment rooms fair better in both presentation and comfort and the massage was excellent. All staff we had contact with were pleasant and friendly. One waiter not only ensured the safety of a bag I forgot to pick up when leaving the pool, but checked in with me later, to make sure I had received it back in good order. The pool area is okay, generally well kept and tidy. Imagine in peak season it would probably be over subscribed though. Thought the bar staff could be a bit more proactive in offering poolside service out of season, when the poolside bar is closed. The issue of not bringing food or drink into the hotel is frustrating, especially given the ridiculously high prices for bottles of water from the bar. However, if you are sensible about how you bring in 'contraband', you're unlikely to get challenged. Overall, this hotel could be a really lovely place to stay, as it is in a good location in the resort and small enough to be a 'boutique' hotel. However, TMK is not making best use of the hotel, leaving it way short of a four star standard. The corridors are depressing, the rooms uninspiring and the dining experience disastrous. Sort it out TMK and give the staff somewhere they can be truly proud to work and guests somewhere they be delighted to stay.
